Lake Onega

The shape of Lake Onega reminds of a lobster with only one claw. Covering an area of 10,000 sq. km it is thus the second largest lake in Europe. The average depth is 30 meters, however, there are parts of the lake which are 120 meters deep. More than 5 0 rivers feed the lake, but only one river  - the Svirl originates from the lake. There are over 1,300 islands in the lake, which mostly lie on the north where there are many pinewoods on the edges of the rocky fissured shores. In the middle and the southern areas, where sandy shores merge with shallow bays full of sedge, we mostly find lime and edge trees.

The natural and wildlife contribute to the attraction of the Onega region. More than 40 types in the lake including salmon and trout. The trout stocks were bread artificially using fish from Lake Sevan in Armenia. Although the lake-water has brown tint, it is very clean and has high monaural content. The lake’s northern location explains the severe climate and frequent storms give rise to waves of up to five meters high.
