“Ms Chernyshevsky/Vodohod River Cruises”

I frequently travel solo and have wanted to see Russia. When I had a chance for a double cabin at a solo price, I jumped at it. I knew it would not be luxurious. My ship was similar to the Shashkov and Russ described in previous reviews. The room was tiny but functional, with the interesting shower/sink combo previously described. The bed was comfortable enough for me, though short. The public areas were pleasant, though there were lots of stairs. The staff was young and pleasant, but apparently mostly students trying to improve their foreign language skills. They weren't well-trained in customer service or very organized. I thought the food was pretty good, though some found it bland. We had to sit at the same place at every meal. Fortunately my table got along very well, but not everyone could say that. The entertainment was mostly provided by the young staff and we had a show the last night put on by the guests and staff. The guides on land were mostly very good, and what we saw was beautiful and fascinating. In short, if you want to see Russia at a good price, check out the Vodohod cruises. I recommend their website, But be realistic in your expectations. Be prepared for plenty of downtime, and don't expect to fill it with wifi. I tried to think of it as being in summer camp, or a college dorm again. Even the background music(soothing instrumentals) and mixed drinks at the bar(White Russians! Grasshoppers!) reminded me of the 80's. I suspect this was a more "Russian" experience than, say, Viking, but it won't be to everyone's liking. But Russia and the Volga are well worth seeing however you wish to do it...
